Bronx SalsaFest is a month-long, borough-wide annual celebration of Salsa, the musical genre that has taken the world by storm and has roots in The Bronx.

 

Each year the summer sizzles in The Bronx as this annual event brings together some of the borough’s best musicians, photographers, documentarians, storytellers, and, of course salseros, dancing in the streets and on the sand throughout the month of August.

Salsa Bruja takes salsa from the clubs and theaters to this beautiful garden setting. The show features singer Caridad De La Luz, widely known as “La Bruja” (“The Witch”), as the evening’s MC and vocalist.

A “Conversations with the Masters” featuring Ray Santos, a Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer who grew up in The Bronx. He is the only living musician who has played, composed and arranged for the Mambo Kings (Machito, Tito Rodriguez, and Tito Puente). The interview will be followed by a music performance by Anaisa Charanga, a multi-generational Cuban-style charanga all-female band, led by flautist Jessica Valiente.

This is an enjoyable "hard-core uptown" salsa social held in a large newly renovated dance studio which attracts dancers of all levels, including some very advanced ones & instructors/performers, from NY, CT and NJ.   The excellent music is a wide selection of different styles and eras of very danceable salsa.  There is definitely an "uptown" Latino atmosphere here representing the authentic flavor and roots of our New York style On 2 mambo.  And the MC is the one and only famous Levi "La Lena".

Don’t miss this historic concert as it will feature the first appearance with the Band in this US tour of Vanessa Formell from the Formell musical dynasty. She will be joined by a special guest – the legendary Pedrito Calvo, the original singer of the band and recognized as one of the most famous interpreters of contemporary Afro-Latin music.
