In the heart of Hunts Point, The Boogie Down Grind Café-Bar has become a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Owned by Majora Carter, the award-winning café-bar featured in Savor The Bronx Restaurant Week, offers more than just coffee and cocktails—it provides a much-needed third space in the South Bronx.
Founded with investment from local families, Carter’s own savings, and a generous lease from SEBCO, The Boogie Down Grind quickly became a local treasure. Inside, the café hums with energy and life.
“We have hosted informal reunions with the adult children of men returning home from long prison bids, baby showers, birthdays, many art exhibits, weekly open mic nights, and sometimes just a place for a teacher to decompress after a hard day with the next generation.” Carter says. “All these moments would have not happened here without us. The love we receive is constant.”
The Boogie Down Grind Café-Bar does not fall short when it comes to delivering a quality experience in a unique package. It’s not only a café-bar but a reflection of the neighborhood’s creative spirit and resilience.
“We are the 1st locally owned specialty coffee shop in the South Bronx, the only one with a distinct hip hop South Bronx community flavor, and the only cafe in the Bronx ever to be named Best in NYC by TimeOutNY.”
Beyond coffee and cocktails, The Boogie Down Grind is committed to giving back. The café provides free “Pick Up Your Dog Poop” signs to help keep the neighborhood clean, offers free events during business hours, and makes private events affordable for all. “Groups meet up here for many reasons and often end up meeting someone new along the way,” Carter adds.
In every cup poured and every event held, The Boogie Down Grind Café-Bar continues to affirm its role as more than a business, it’s a symbol of possibility, pride, and togetherness in the South Bronx. “You will not regret visiting here.”
